Research Assistant/Associate in Heavy Goods Vehicle Tyre Digital Twin (Fixed Term)

A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in Heavy Goods Vehicle Tyre Digital Twin, based in the Department of Engineering.
The role is based in Central Cambridge within the Centre for Sustainable Road Freight (SRF, www.csrf.ac.uk/), a leading centre focusing on reducing energy use and emissions from the road freight sector. The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.
The key responsibilities and duties are:
- Conduct independent and team-based research into various aspects of the development of an HGV tyre digital twin, including mathematical modelling, laboratory and field testing, validation, and implementation;
- Lead and coordinate in-service data collection from of HGVs;
- Conduct techno-economic studies for HGV tyre technologies;
- Write project milestone reports and final report;
- Attending project meetings, workshops and conferences;
- Presenting research outcome to stakeholders;
- Publish research articles;
- Supervise undergraduate projects;
- Provide research support PhD students;
- Support project management.
The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are:
- Must hold or be close to the completion of a PhD in the area of direct relevance to tyre mechanics.
- Strong theoretical and practical understanding of heavy goods vehicle tyre mechanics, tyre wear mechanisms, and vehicle dynamics and control.
- Expertise in Finite Element Analysis(FEA) and vehicle manoeuvrability and fuel/energy consumption simulation.
- Expertise in designing laboratory test rigs for tyre wear measurement and conducting laboratory experiments on tyre wear.
- Real-world experience in measuring tyre wear from heavy goods vehicles.
- Ability to collect and process in-service heavy goods vehicle operational data.
- Strong communication skills including the ability to work in a team and to liaise closely with colleagues, administrative staff, technical staff, equipment suppliers and boarder industrial partners.
- Excellent presentation and academic writing skills.
Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience). Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.
