Big Data for Small and Medium Enterprises - an Alan Turing Institute Summit

Monday, 16 November 2015, 10.00am to 4.00pm
Location: Institute for Manufacturing, Cambridge

10:00-16:00 16th November 2015, Institute for Manufacturing, Cambridge

Data science increasingly plays a role for UK SMEs and startups, with specific challenges and the need to adapt rapidly. SMEs must increasingly develop partnerships, in order to derive value from their data, be they in logistics, supply chain management, customer and business insight or ensuring data quality, value and security.

This summit aims to identify the key challenges in data science for SMEs and to identify key priorities in meeting them. We want to hear from SMEs and startups that were born digital, those that recognise the potential of big data and are actively seeking to use it, and those who customers are increasingly becoming dependent on data. What are your challenges, your priorities, and your needs in getting value from data?

Through case studies and discussion, we aim to explore how using data can create value and competitive advantage, and identify the opportunities and challenges for the data economy. Do not miss this opportunity to make your voice heard.

This event will provide an opportunity to feed back to the academic community and the new Alan Turing Institute for data science. The Alan Turing Institute, opening in London in Autumn 2015, will bring together leaders in advanced mathematics and computing science from the Universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, Warwick, and University College London. The Institute will conduct first class research and development in data science and promote the development and use of ‘big data’ to deliver benefit to a range of sectors. This summit will help the Institute to understand how their work can bring benefit to the SME community.

We are delighted to present a session organised by techUK, the UK's technology trade organisation:

Experiences of UK SME on the Big Data Journey – The Story So Far

This techUK-led session, chaired by Antony Walker, techUK Deputy CEO,  brings together leading UK SMEs already using Big Data and Data Analytics to create value and gain a competitive advantage. Speakers  will share their experiences, insights, best practices and lessons learnt from their Big Data journey.  Issues discussed will include how these SMEs have developed and implemented a Big Data strategy, the business opportunities gained from applying Big Data technologies and solutions  and the challenges they faced and overcame along the way.  With speakers representing  SMEs at different stages of their Big Data journey, this session is a unique opportunity to  hear from SMEs that are using Big Data and Data Analytics in their business operations, explore what they might have done differently, how they overcame business and technical challenges and discuss the type and level of support  needed so that more UK SMEs can embark on the Big Data journey.
