This Open for Business event is part of an INI programme on Black holes: bridges between number theory and holographic quantum information and will take place within the workshop on Machine learning toolkits and integrability techniques in gravity. It aims to provide a meeting ground to facilitate interactions and exchanges between representatives of academia, research and industry, relevant to the theme, with the objective of identifying points of mutual interest and possible co-activity. 

Background 

Over the last half decade, we have seen Machine Learning (ML) and its applications come into their own as the go-to genie family when it comes to exploring and processing the ever-increasing cache of information that is being pooled from and into almost every aspect of modern human interaction and activity. From signal processing to search engines and smart interactive portals to art creation and audio-visual transmutation, as well as in proving mathematical theorems, ML has progressively wound its way into and is fast becoming intricately intertwined with our lives and times. More than just being a ubiquitous tool, it is rapidly transcending into a philosophical approach that has the potential to transform the very underpinnings of how we view problem solving itself. Its many applications in diverse fields are, as expected, creations of the specific needs within the fields, and the current crop of ML functionalities in any given sector is simply an adaptive evolutionary response to the epistemological pressures and necessities of the sector.  

Across fields, we are thus witnessing not just a transformation of mechanisms of thought by ML, but ML itself being changed, and expanded and diversified into various new roles and modalities customised to the questions in each field. Consequently, the time is now ripe to bring together thinkers and practitioners in mathematical physics as well as industry to exchange ideas, opinions and philosophies relating to the possibilities and burgeoning challenges of having ML reshape their respective landscapes. The goal of this mind-meld is to potentially discover ML functionalities and requisites of common interest as well as pathways to cross-functional exchanges of mutual benefit to academia and industry as part of new collaborative frameworks for a new era. 

Aims & Objectives 

The planned activities of the day geared towards this goal include a morning session of talks by two representatives of academia and two from industry, based on the theme of: 

• ML apps and industrial objectives: two sides of one revolving door 

Followed by two afternoon panels: 

• ML applications to problem solving: universal and specific features

• Biases, ethics and predilections in the age of ML: perils and countermeasures 

A Provisional Programme is being developed.  

We anticipate the event will run from 10.00 – 17.00 and will close with a networking reception. All timings are GMT. 

Poster Session

Attendees are encouraged to present a poster during a dedicated poster session and during breaks and lunches throughout the event. Please indicate on the registration form if you are interested in presenting a poster, along with a title and abstract.
