Research Associate*/Research Assistant in Sustainable Computational Science
Closing date

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented researcher to join our team as part of the Green Algorithms Initiative in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care, one of Europe's leading academic departments of population health sciences. The post will suit researchers interested in improving our understanding, and mitigating, the environmental impacts of scientific computing.

Your primary role will be to lead projects improving how computing environmental impacts are currently estimated and reported and investigate the impact of high-impact computational tools in AI and/or computational biology. The appointed researcher will have research interests aligned with those of our groups and the freedom to develop their own ideas for new research. Initial possibilities for research projects include:

  • Studying the impact of scientific tools expected to become prominent in coming years through targeted case studies, in particular in the fields of artificial intelligence and/or computational biology.
  • Exploring ways to better integrate life-cycle analyses in impact estimates and expanding environmental impacts beyond carbon footprint.
  • Quantifying the different estimates' uncertainty and finding the best ways to report them in tools such as the Green Algorithms calculator.
